"Life in Kimmswick", published by the Kimmswick Historical
Society ©2009, consists of the memoirs of Native Son William Robert Morrison
Bradshaw (b. July 31, 1889, d. November 2, 1970), plus a 22 page section,
featuring the basic facts of Kimmswick's founding in 1859 and early growth.
The book was edited by members of the Historical Society, with introductory
pages and remarks by Ben Bradshaw, current resident of the Kimmswick area
and youngest son of the author of the memoirs.
The publication (including many great historic photos) is in
the format of a coffee table book and provides a remarkable look at the
Kimmswick of 1850 through 1910, plus following the author's life and times
as a railroader throughout the Midwest and West (starting in Iowa and ending
in Idaho). William R.M. Bradshaw describes growing up in a small Mississippi
River town, during the heyday of riverboat traffic, adding many graphic
stories.
The book (a powerful personal memoir and town history) introduces the reader to riverboats, including colorful showboats and simple
ferries across the Mississippi. The reader will learn of Montesano Springs
Park, forerunner to today's amusement parks such as Six Flags, children's
games, and terms such as "floaters", "mark twain", "half twain" & "no bottom". Find out, too, about snakes measuring eleven feet in length, learning to
swim in the Mississippi and adventures in Kimmswick area woods and meadows.
